You are invited to apply to participate in a Deaf/Hearing Team Interpreting Training that will take place on FRIDAY, JUNE 15 AND SATURDAY, JUNE 16 IN FRESNO, CA.
Rosemary R. Wanis, Ed.D., CDI, Jim Brune, CDI, and Rachel Kleist, CDI, will be facilitating this training together.
We will have 20 Deaf individuals who are training to become Professional Deaf Interpreters from June 9 through June 17 and you are invited to join us for two days for the portion on deaf-hearing interpreting teams.
Therefore, we are opening up only 20 slots for interpreters who are hearing to join us for a joint effort to train side-by-side. This opportunity is intensive, hands-on, and a full immersion experience. All applicants are required to be fully committed and engaged in this process.
Information about the co-trainers:
Rosemary R. Wanis born Deaf to hearing parents in Alexandria, Egypt. Immigrated to the US at the age of 9 months. Was not identified to be Deaf until the age of 4. Grew up using hearing aids and speech/speechreading. After learning ASL at the age of 18 she went to Gallaudet and earned her Master's in Social Work and Master's in Administration in 1998. She has been a Certified Deaf Interpreter since 2005. Since that time has primarily worked in legal settings as well as a variety of community-based work. In 2013 she became a national certified Deaf Interpreter Training through NCIEC. Since that time she offers team trainings at least once a year in Fresno, California. She graduates from Fresno State with a doctorate in Educational Leadership in May, 2018. She currently works as a full-time lecturer at Fresno State in the Deaf Studies department and is a single mom to a sassy 12-year-old KODA!
Jim Brune, a New Jersey native, is a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) who also works as an Adjunct Instructor at Ohlone College in the Deaf Preparatory Program and the Interpreter Preparation Program. Jim has also presented workshops on self-advocacy nationally at the grassroots level as well as national conventions. Jim is also a credentialed Disaster Response Interpreter has worked with NorCal Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to provide intensive training to sign language interpreters about Disaster Response Interpreting (DRI). Jim was a participant in Rosemary Wanis' first cohort for the Deaf Interpreter Training in 2015 and he also took the Mental Health Interpreter Training (MHIT) in Alabama. Jim is a Gallaudet University graduate (B.A., Social Work, ’97) and previously worked for 12 years at Deaf Counseling, Advocacy and Referral Agency (DCARA), the last 6 years as the Executive Director. Jim, who is an uncle to 5 nieces and nephews, is an avid tennis player who resides in San Francisco, CA.
Rachel Kleist is a Northern California native – primarily from the Sacramento area. Rachel began working as a Deaf interpreter on an as-needed basis for an agency that served Deaf plus adults in 2008. This experience led Rachel into an interest in the field of interpreting and obtaining more training. Rachel took her first “official” Deaf Interpreting workshop from Carole Lazorisak, in 2012. This interest and curiosity became a passion and Rachel continued searching for more training specific to Deaf Interpreters. She was part of Rosemary Wanis’ first cohort for the 40-hour Deaf Interpreter Training and has attended both historic Deaf Interpreter Conferences, in addition to two consecutive years of Mental Health Interpreter Trainings provided by the state of Alabama. Rachel became RID certified in 2016, and a credentialed Disaster Response Interpreter. In addition to working freelance as an interpreter, Rachel is currently in the process of acquiring her Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice from Cal State University Sacramento and in May of 2018, completed the Interpreter Preparation Program at American River College.
DRESS CODE:
Because of the setting, casual attire is appropriate. No ripped/torn jeans/shorts please; shorts are acceptable. You will want comfortable shoes as we may do a little walking during on of those days. A full schedule and agenda will be sent to you prior to the training.

This is next to a Homeless shelter and rescue mission. Parking is located in a locked gated area.
TRAINING DATES:
Friday, June 15 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. (lunch provided from 12 to 1 pm)
Saturday, June 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
16 hours of training is offered to certified interpreter at 1.6 CEUs.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
a. Provide three or more strategies for effective team interpreting
b. Effectively explain the roles and responsibilities of each part of the deaf/hearing team
c. Explain the purpose of pre, during, and post conference discussions
d. Identify at least two power dynamics that may arise in a deaf/hearing team situation
e. Prepare a set of tools or scripts that you may use when asked to justify why a team is necessary in a variety of settings.
TRAINING COSTS:
$225 per person (including 1.6 CEUs) or $210 (without CEUs) OR $175/$160 without lodging (see below for specifics)
This rate includes 16 hours of training, and four meals (lunch and dinner on Friday, breakfast and lunch on Saturday)
Snacks, coffee, tea, water, provided all day on both days
You are not able to opt out of the meals. That is required as part of our cost.

FOR OVERNIGHT OPTIONS:
If you wish to stay at the Mission at the Mission while you are participating in the training then you will need to plan for the following costs:
OPTON 1: 1 night (Friday night only) plus 4 meals: for double occupancy - cost is $225 with CEUs and $210 without
OPTION 2: 4 meals (I will get my own lodging) - cost is $175 with CEUs and $160 without
CRITERIA TO APPLY:
* Must be currently RID Certified (your RID membership number) OR have completed an Interpreter Training Program (provide proof of ITP completion via email to [email protected] with PROOF in subject field)
*Interpreters with an EIPA score of 4.0 (with or without RID membership) or above are welcome to join us as well if currently working in P-12 setting. Please email proof of EIPA score to [email protected] with PROOF in subject field.
* No prior experience working with a Deaf Interpreter is required; but is beneficial to have a basic understanding of this team approach

CANCELLATION Policy:

REFUND Policy:
For any and all refunds, a $20 charge will be incurred to cover the cost of the transaction.
In the event of cancellation; a full refund will be issued (except for the $20 charge)
In the event that you cancel less than 10 days before the first day of training; you will be issued a refund of 50% of your registration fee.
